Magnesium sulfate (chemical formula: MgSO4) is a common inorganic compound with various uses in industry, agriculture, medicine, and other fields.
Industrial fields
Used in leather, explosives, fertilizers, papermaking, porcelain, printing dyes, lead-acid batteries and other industries. Magnesium sulfate, like other minerals such as potassium, calcium, amino acid salts, and silicates, can be used as bath salts. In the printing and dyeing industry, it is used as an alkali absorber to maintain the pH value of the color developing solution stable and ensure uniform dyeing. It can also be used as a chemical reagent, a filler in papermaking and a weighting agent for textiles [12], a component of nickel baths for electroplating other metals; a catalyst support for platinum in sulfuric acid production, etc. It is used as an additive to the trace element magnesium in the feed industry. Magnesium sulfate is also a component of fire retardant compositions, preservatives, tanning agents and coagulants.
Agricultural fields
Fertilizer: In agriculture and horticulture, magnesium sulfate is used to improve magnesium-deficient soils (magnesium is an essential element of chlorophyll molecules) and promote the metabolism of sugars in plants. It is most commonly used for potted plants or magnesium-containing crops such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes, peppers, and hemp. The advantage of applying magnesium sulfate over other magnesium sulfate soil conditioners (such as dolomitic lime) is its high solubility. Magnesium sulfate can be used as a raw material to produce potassium sulfate fertilizer and calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer [13].
Feed: Feed-grade magnesium sulfate is used as a magnesium supplement in feed processing. Magnesium is an indispensable factor in the bone formation process and muscle contraction of livestock and poultry. It is an activator of multiple enzymes in livestock and poultry and plays an extremely important role in the metabolism and nerve function of livestock and poultry. If the livestock and poultry body lacks magnesium, it will lead to disorders in metabolism and nerve function, an imbalance in supply, affect the growth and development of livestock and poultry, and even cause death.
