Calcium chloride, composed of chlorine and calcium, has the chemical formula CaCl2 and is a typical ionic halide. It is a white solid at room temperature and its aqueous solution is neutral. Calcium chloride is often used in brine used in refrigeration equipment, road deicing agents and desiccants. Since it easily absorbs water and deliquesces in the air[5], anhydrous calcium chloride should be stored in sealed containers. Calcium chloride and its hydrates and solutions have important application value in many fields such as food manufacturing, building materials, medicine and biology.
Dehumidifier and desiccant: used to dry air or neutral/alkaline gases due to their high hygroscopicity (cannot dry acidic gases such as HCl).
Deicing agent: lowers the freezing point of water and is used for road de-icing (more effective than table salt, but corrosive to concrete and plants).
Food industry:
As a coagulant (such as tofu making).
Electrolyte supplement (sports drinks).
Food preservation (E509 code).
Medical use: an antidote for treating calcium deficiency or hydrofluoric acid burns.
